Philadelphia, PA - The Health Federation of Philadelphia’s (HFP) National Health Corps (NHC) program has been funded for a new three-year cycle. In addition to continuing to operate NHC in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, and Chicago, the program will expand to partner with new organizations and serve community members in San Francisco and New York State.
On July 25, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) awarded nearly $42 million in funding to 49 Health Center Controlled Networks (HCCNs) throughout the country. In total, the HHS funding will reach nearly 1,200 federally-funded health centers across all 50 states. Locally, through this grant, the Health Federation of Philadelphia (HFP) received $910,000 for 26 participating health centers throughout Pennsylvania in its HCCN.
In late June, HFP's Creating Collaborative Communities program (C3) launched with support from the William Penn Foundation. The program will aim to strengthen the community of home visiting staff in the region with a theme of "Building Connections." On September 11th, the Health Federation of Philadelphia’s (HFP) Marcy Witherspoon walked into Project HOME’s Stephen Klein Wellness Center optimistic that she was going to play a part in changing lives – she just wasn’t sure how many. Witherspoon, a senior training specialist with HFP, was charged with the task of organizing and facilitating the Health Federation’s pilot group of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP), an evidence-based program that is intended to prevent the development of Type 2 Diabetes, or delay the onset. “It’s not a weight loss program – it’s a lifestyle change program,” Witherspoon stated. “It’s about healthy eating and positive choices. We don’t use the word diet and we don’t use the word exercise.”

he 2018 Social Determinants of Health Conference hosted by the American Heart Association was held in Philadelphia on Temple University’s Campus on September 24th and 25th 2018. The study team, led by Mobilizing Action for Resilient Communities Advisor Melissa T. Merrick, analyzed adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Their findings reinforce existing knowledge regarding the widespread prevalence of childhood adversity across all demographics. The study also brings into sharp focus the fact that some groups are bearing a disproportionate burden of those traumatic experiences.
