JOB SUMMARY
The Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), through its Viral Hepatitis program located within the Division of Disease Control, works to prevent and address hepatitis B and C by measuring their incidence and prevalence in Philadelphia; working with the medical community to improve reporting, clinical, and prevention activities; promoting best practices for people who have hepatitis A, B, or C to get tested, linked to care, kept in care, treated, and cured; and coordinating case management to reduce and address transmission from mothers to babies.
The Viral Hepatitis Prevention Coordinator (VHPC) will coordinate activities related to viral hepatitis prevention, including outreach, training, education, and collaboration with relevant programs to facilitate access to viral hepatitis services. This role creates and coordinates programmatic messaging. Hepatitis B and C Elimination planning and activities will inform many priorities of this position, and the VHPC will help define and execute the citywide implementation of this work. This position works closely with viral hepatitis surveillance activities to elevate the Viral Hepatitis Program's priorities and initiatives.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Responsibilities/Duties
- Strategic planning for prevention, community collaboration, patient outreach, and policy-related activities for Viral Hepatitis Program.
- Coordinate outreach, education, and access to healthcare services for those at highest risk for hepatitis B & C infections in Philadelphia.
- Support administration and logistics for the Hepatitis C Allies of Philadelphia (HepCAP) coalition to mobilize city stakeholders to improve the delivery of hepatitis C services including prevention, diagnosis, care, and support services.
- Create and foster working relationships with relevant organizations, community members, and government agencies to support coordinated interventions and efforts.
- Collaborate with state and national partners to advance viral hepatitis elimination goals and objectives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and nationally.
- Facilitate technical assistance to improve the delivery of viral hepatitis services in Philadelphia.
- Assist in grant writing and submission of local and federal cooperative agreements and funding opportunities.
- Develop and provide training, education, and presentations for viral hepatitis targeted to at-risk individuals and providers who serve the general public as well as at-risk populations
- Develop and maintain online marketing campaigns through PDPH and HepCAP’s marketing tools (i.e., Mailchimp, Canva, Phillyhepatitis.org website, Instagram, X, Facebook).
- Collaborate closely with local coalitions and workgroups to develop culturally-competent strategies to improve access to hepatitis B services in high-risk populations, including foreign-born Asian and African communities.
- Participate in program dissemination and manuscript preparation activities.
- Produce grant deliverables for federal partners in timely manner.
- Participate in local, state and national conferences, conference calls and workgroups addressing viral hepatitis and related public health topics.
- Identify clinical and social service settings where adults at risk for viral hepatitis receive services, and promote integration of viral hepatitis prevention, vaccination and testing programs into those settings.
- Support disease surveillance and data management activities through close work with the viral hepatitis surveillance team.
- Participate in emergency preparedness exercises and real response activities at the discretion of the Viral Hepatitis Manager and Division Director.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Previous full-time employment in related roles is valuable experience taken into consideration while reviewing applicants.
Skills/Experience

Experience in viral hepatitis, public health, and harm reduction, highly preferred.

Work Environment: Standard office setting with extended periods at workstation and periodic use of office equipment. This position requires time outside of an office setting and across Philadelphia interacting with community partners and clients.
Position Type and Work Schedule: Full time position, typical hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. Work location is the Philadelphia Department of Public Health Division of Disease Control office at 1101 Market St. 12th Floor in Philadelphia. Employees are expected to work in the office or in the field full-time as of July 2024.
Travel: This position requires some travel for local meetings, outreach events, and community education, as well as potentially 2-3 overnight trips annually for conferences and meetings.
Physical Demands: Ability to transport materials up to 30 pounds on occasion; walking to meetings in nearby offices; navigating public transportation.
