JOB SUMMARY

Home Grown, a fiscally sponsored project of the Health Federation of Philadelphia, is a national collaborative dedicated to creating a more inclusive child care system that values and supports home-based child care (HBCC), including care provided by family, friends, and neighbors (FFN). Guided by core values such as community-centered approaches, collective action, and innovation, the organization prioritizes uplifting care providers and families, fostering provider-led networks, and building scalable solutions.

We are seeking our next Narrative Content Specialist, a skilled multimedia professional who can help elevate the voices and experiences of diverse home-based child care providers. This role is key to advancing Home Grown’s mission by creating content that effectively communicates critical issues to various audiences, such as providers, policy partners, advocates, and the broader field, in ways that inform and influence. The ideal candidate brings exceptional multimedia and interviewing skills, cultural and linguistic sensitivity, and the ability to capture diverse provider experiences in compelling, informative, and influential ways.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Responsibilities/Duties

Content Creation and Storytelling

  • Produce newsletters, blogs, briefs, one-pagers, reports, and other materials that communicate provider experiences and elevate issues in home-based child care.
  • Conduct interviews with providers and other stakeholders, and translate these conversations into clear, compelling content using different formats.
  • Capture and communicate stories with sensitivity to cultural and linguistic differences among providers.
  • Identify when stories are best shared through alternate formats (e.g., video, graphics) and coordinate with colleagues on production.
  • Lead Home Grown’s Insight Panel (monthly conversation with child care providers).

Digital Communications

  • Draft social media posts that align with organizational priorities and effectively connect stories to audiences.
  • Write content for newsletters and coordinate with the Digital and Social Media Content Manager for formatting and distribution.
  • Support the development of digital content, drafting social media copy, coordinating with the Digital and Social Media Content Manager on story ideas, format, and distribution.
  • Support event and conference participation by collecting stories, interviews, and content for digital use, including some video production.

Collaboration and Planning

  • Partner with the Digital and Social Media Content Manager to align content with organizational communications strategies.
  • Develop a system to maintain awareness of Home Grown’s key issues and issues in the broader field.
  • Establish and maintain an editorial calendar to plan and track content production.
  • Coordinate timing on content releases and dissemination with colleagues on the Narrative team.
  • Use tools such as Mailchimp, Canva, Adobe, and Meltwater, or similar, to support communications and content tracking.

Education:  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, English or a related field.

Skills/Experience:

  • 3–5 years of professional experience in writing, content development, or communications.
  • Bilingual proficiency in Spanish (written and spoken) strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to write and edit clearly for diverse audiences, with a portfolio of published work preferred.
  • Experience conducting interviews and transforming conversations into  effective and powerful content.
  • Strong cultural and linguistic sensitivity, with the ability to work effectively with providers from a range of backgrounds; bilingual proficiency in Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with digital communications tools such as Mailchimp, Canva, Adobe, and Meltwater or similar platforms.
  • Ability to manage and maintain an editorial calendar and coordinate content releases with colleagues.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to balance multiple projects.
  • Experience drafting social media content and adapting stories to different formats and channels.
  • Comfort working independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Comfort with multimedia production.
  • Knowledge of media relations principles, strongly preferred.

Work Environment:  Fully remote position working with a national team. We have a preference for candidates residing in the Western states. This position offers the opportunity for hybrid work in downtown Philadelphia.

Position Type and Work Schedule:  Full time position, typical hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm to the candidate’s local time. Flex office schedule options are available with supervisor approval.

Travel:  Ability to travel ~15% of the time to attend conferences, community and partner gatherings, and internal team meetings.
